Passage Two
In the past , sexual modesty was often proposed as the purpose of dress. The Bible tells us that this was the original reason for wearing clothes: Adam and Eve, once they realized that they were naked, "sewed fig leaves together, adn made themselves aprons." Historically, however, shame seems to have played very little part in the developmenmt of costume. In ancient Egypt, Crete and Greece, the naked body was not considered immodest; slaves and atheletes habitually went without clothing, while people of high rank wore garments that were cut and draped so as to show a good deal when in motion.
Some modern writers believe that the deliberate concealment of certain parts of the body originated not as a way of discouraging sexual interest, but as a clever device for arousing it. According to this view, clothes are the physical equivalent of remarkslike "I've got a secret"; they are a tease, a come-on. It is certainly true that parts of the human form considered sexually arousing are often covered in such a way as to exaggerate and draw attention to them. People done up in shiny colored wrappings and bow affect us just as a birthday present does: we're courious , turned on; we want to undo the package....
Many visitors to undist camps report that the sight of all that uncovered flesh brings fatigue and a sense of being slightly unwell. Later, after one gets used to it as the ancients were, it seems merely banal.
