With all of the votes counted, the main opposition party the Democratic Alliance won 43 per cent of the votes while the ANC had 41 per cent. Nelson Mandela’s ANC came to power in the first national election for all South Africans in 1994. But current president Jacob Zuma is under great pressure to step down due to charges of dishonest behaviors. The Democratic Alliance, which named its first black party leader last year, angered the ANC last month by declaring that it was the only party that could realize Mandela’s dream of a great and united South Africa. In a short speech shortly before final results were announced, 74-year-old Zuma thanked South Africans for a vote he called largely peaceful, free and fair. 4.
